Cost of Family Failure index quoted widely in response to marriage tax break criticisms

The Relationships Foundation’s Cost of Family Failure Index was (mis!)quoted in the Daily Express on Saturday, in an article about the proposed marriage tax breaks.

“When families break up they suddenly need two homes rather than one.

Children who previously would be looked after by one parent while the other went out to work suddenly require formal childcare. Many families who previously were able to support themselves financially will be driven to claim housing benefit and income support.

A recent study by the Relationships Foundation concluded that if every couple with children stayed together it would save the taxpayer £4billion a year.”

In fact, the figure is £46 billion rather than £4billion — even more of a reason to support families!
