Families – of all shapes and sizes – are hard pressed on every side. In this pamphlet we argue the case for relieving the stress in one area – the ever-increasing pressure on parents to work at weekends, the very time when their school-age children will be at home and in need of parenting. We believe that the time has come for a Family Day Bill.
The Family Day Bill we are here proposing and offering to parliamentarians of either House and all parties would give every parent of children under the age of 16 the right in law to a weekend day off each week. This right would be established through an extension to current flexible working legislation. It would address the increasing prevalence of ‘shift-parenting’ and of young children being left ‘home alone’.
